Jean Surgenor (nee Fleming), a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully in Drayton Valley Hospital on October 24, 2024. Born on July 11, 1943, in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, Jean was known for her kind-hearted nature and her warm spirit that touched the lives of many.
Jean was not only a devoted mother to her two children, Janet (Wes Medwed) Bush and Nigel (Monica) Surgenor, but she also took great joy in being a dedicated grandmother to her seven grandchildren: Ashliegh (Stuart) Gray, Kristin Hawryluk, Kaitlyn Bush, Garrett Hawryluk, Brendan Bush, Gage Surgenor, and Max Surgenor. In addition, Jean was a proud great-grandmother to five little ones—Auliv Gray, Ayla Gray, Sohvi Hawryluk, Vander Gray, and Freja Brown—each of whom held a special place in her memory.
Jean was blessed with 13 siblings, who were an integral part of her life, including Jimmy Fleming, Sarah Lamont, Maurice (Heather) Fleming, Helen (Graham) Maybin, Leslie (Lola) Fleming, Anna (Davy) Surgenor, Margaret Irvine, Sandra (Sammy) Caldwell, Ivor (Caroline) Fleming, and Mervyn (Jenny) Fleming. Jean is also survived by her brother-in-law, Denver McCaw.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank in November of 2018, as well as her parents, Minnie and Alexander Fleming, her infant sister Margaret Fleming, and siblings Bobbie Fleming and Sharon McCaw.
Jean's love for cooking and gardening reflected her nurturing spirit, while her passion for country music and Irish music connected her to her roots. She cherished her return trips to Ireland, where she enjoyed visiting family and embracing the culture she loved so dearly.
A Celebration of Life service will honor Jean and Frank's memory on November 9, 2024, commencing at 1:00 PM at Drayton Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services, located at 5029-48th Street, Drayton Valley, Alberta.
