James William Lawton, fondly know as Bill, a cherished member of the Hattonford community, passed away peacefully on October 23 2024, in Edmonton at the age of 84. Born on April 7, 1940, in Hattonford, James lived a life filled with personal accomplishments and deep familial love.
Throughout his career, Bill was a dedicated school trustee, a tireless community volunteer and a respected cattleman, known not only for his professional contributions but also for his remarkable skills as a woodworker. His commitment to the land and nature was evidenced by his tireless efforts to plant numerous trees, a testament to his legacy of stewardship. He had a passion for travel, which took him to various corners of the world including China, Mexico, England, Australia, and across Canada. These journeys enriched his life and broadened his horizons.
Bill held a particular fondness for the cattle market, never missing a market report on CFCW, a ritual that highlighted his keen interest in local agriculture and community affairs.
At the heart of Bill's life was his family. He shared a profound bond with his wife, Irene, and was the proud father of seven children: John (Stacey) Lawton, Tammy Lawton, Tracy Lawton, Joseph Lawton, Bill (Tamara) McDougall, Trevor McDougall, and Cindy McDougall. Bill cherished his role as a grandfather to 15 grandchildren, including Janelle Lawton, Levi Lawton, Jayden Lawton, Caitlyn Clark, Chad Lawton, Brooklyn Beaudry, Sydney Beaudry, Shay McDougall, Rylee McDougall, Sarah Clark, Rebecca Clark, Keaton McDougall, Nathan McDougall, Sydney (Keagan) Pacholok, and Savannah (Spencer) Wigley. His joy was further multiplied as he became a great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren: Deanne McCready Lawton, Rory Wigley, and Koen Hunter Chambers. He is also survived by five siblings: George (Constance) Lawton, Christine Birkenhagen, Barbara (Mike) Philips, Murray (Lisa) Conway, and Joyce (John) Fox. These family ties were invaluable to him, nurturing the special bond he held with each successive generation.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, James and Rosa Lawton, his son, Joseph Lawton, and his sisters, Dorothy Winter and Margaret Tyler.
The funeral service to honor James's life will be held on November 2, 2024, at Beaver Meadow Hall in Hattonford, beginning at 2:00 PM, with an interment to follow at Hattonford Cemetery. The warmth of James's spirit will endure through the lives he touched and the memories shared. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
