Genevieve Taylan Barkley, born on August 26, 1971, in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, peacefully passed away surrounded by family and friends at Drayton Valley Hospital on October 11, 2024. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend who touched lives of many through her compassionate care and unwavering dedication.
Genevieve embarked on a fulfilling career as a school nurse in the Philippines before continuing her nursing journey at the Drayton Valley Long Term Care, where she served more that 20 years. Known for her natural caregiving instincts, she was a respected leader in both her professional and personal endeavors; Genevieve had an exceptional talent for organization and was always thinking of others before herself.
She enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought her joy and fulfillment. An avid gardener, she took great pleasure in nurturing both vegetable and flower gardens. She was a passionate sports fan, specifically supporting the Blue Jays and the Oilers. Genevieve was known to excel in volleyball, showcasing her athleticism, and she delighted family and friends alike with her skills as a terrific dancer. In addition to her physical talents, she was a good cook and a magnificent baker, specializing in making spring rolls and delicious cookies that were cherished by all who tasted them.
Genevieve is lovingly remembered by her husband of 24 years, Doug Barkley, and their two children, daughter Alyssa Barkley and son Jace Barkley. She is also survived by her siblings, Halford (Genevieve) Sabado, Geraldine Ho, Gladys (Richard) Cabatic, Glenda Sabado, and Generose Sabado. Her family circle was further enriched by her father-in-law, Ronald Barkley, and sister-in-law, Sherry Barkley, along with a treasured group of nieces and nephews, including Angelo (Remalynn) Sabado, Mica (Nathan) Ell, Madelene Ho, Stacey Cabatic, Ashley Ferguson, and Chelsey Ferguson. Genevieve also leaves behind her grandnieces and grandnephews, Angel and Angela Sabado, and Xander Cabatic.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, Rufino and Soledad Sabado, and her mother-in-law, Mildred Barkley.
Genevieve Barkley’s legacy as a caregiver, leader, and beloved family member will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.

A viewing will take place on October 19, 2024, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Drayton Valley at 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service starting at 1:00 PM.
